Harmsworth Memorial Trust
To commemorate the deaths of his sons, Vere Sidney Tudor Harmsworth and Harold Vyvyan St George Harmsworth in the First World War, Viscount Rothermere made a number of gifts to Benenden. In the early 1920’s he conveyed to the Parish plots of land including the recreation ground (adjoining the Bull Inn), the Iden Green recreation ground, the St George’s Club, the allotment field in Walkhurst Road, and the allotment field in Standen Street, Iden Green. He also made a generous endowment for their upkeep.
In 1967 these were legally combined into the Harmsworth Memorial Trust (HMT) and the Parish Council became sole trustee. Today the HMT maintains and runs the Benenden Village Hall, the St George’s building and club, as well as the recreation grounds in Benenden and Iden Green.
Currently the Trust is administered by the Parish Council. It meets in public at least ten times a year, generally following Parish Council meetings, and follows its own set of Standing Orders.
